"Erase the Hate," a community reception featuring Dennis Shepard, father of Matthew Shepard, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at OutCentral.

Dennis Shepard is the father of Matthew Shepard and has been a GLBT advocate both during Matt's life and, very publicly, since the hate-motivated murder in Laramie, Wy., which took Matt's life at age 21.

Dennis Shepard's biography:

Dennis received a BA degree in pre-law history with an education minor from the University of Wyoming before marrying Judy in 1973 and settling in Casper, Wyoming, to raise their family. While living and working out of Casper, he earned another degree in safety in 1986 and obtained the safety equivalent of the professional engineer's certification in 1989. A construction and oil industry safety specialist, Dennis has worked in safety since 1971. He worked for more than 17 years as the head of the construction safety operations for Saudi Aramco Oil Company in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, before retiring from that position in 2009.

He has served on the Matthew Shepard Foundation board of directors since the organization's inception, and currently speaks to audiences around the country, particularly to victims' advocacy organizations and law enforcement audiences about his experiences and the importance of equal treatment of LGBT crime victims and their loved ones. He and Judy continue to live and work in Casper.
